Headcoverings in the Black Church

I came across this video on YouTube and I was surprised at all the veiled ladies. It is footage of
Rev. Thomas A. Dorsey at some special service which I understand to be a consecration service. Many of ladies are dressed in white with white veilings.

To those of you who don't know who Thomas Dorsey was he was a gospel song writer who suffered a tremendous loss which inspired  him to write the song " Precious Lord, Take My Hand."  He was known as the "Father of Gospel Music". He went to be with the Lord in 1993 and there will never be another Thomas Dorsey. Perhaps a close second would be Andre Crouch who went to be with the Lord a couple of months ago.

Anyway, getting back to the veilings, I remember seeing ladies when I was a little girl going to church dresses like that. They looked so pretty!

When didn't go to church much when I was a little girl but we listened to live black churches on the radio in the morning and evenings.Gospel music was so much better back then than it is now.
So anyway, I was so excited to see these ladies. There is a closeup in the video of one a lady who reminded me of my mother.

  2. When I was growing up sometimes I would go to church with my grandma. One woman there ALWAYS had a hat on, even outside of church. She was a good friend to my grandma and we saw her quite often outside of church. When I began reading the bible and saw the verses on headcovering, my mind went back to Mrs. Casperson and her hat. It was her covering! The connection was very special to me and I believe she was a godly woman who is now with the Lord.

WARNING: Some Parts of This Post Is Controversial!

I wonder what would happen if men had a march similar to the recent women's marches demanding their right not to be exposed to half dressed women in the workplace, in church, on the street, on magazine covers, etc? What if they marched demanding their right to be treated like men and not a child by their wives and girlfriends? To be allowed to be a dad instead of their child being killed in the womb? To not be portrayed on television and movies as idiots?

What would happen if they  wore (like inappropriately shaped hats the women wore on their heads to prove their womanhood ) on their heads inappropriately  shaped hats to prove their manhood?

Satan has been telling lies to women ever since The Garden:

" I can wear this see through dress! It's my body!"

"It's his problem if my low cut blouse causes him to lust"

"It's not a baby, it's tissue! It's my body!"

"Motherhood degrades women"

"We don't  need to submit to …

I married the love of my life. Back then I couldn't see 25 years into the future. I never imagined having three daughters.  We didn't anticipate struggles on both our parts but we are so grateful for the way the Lord has brought us through. Things are not perfect between but we continue to trust God and know that He can work things out.
And now for your giggling pleasure, here are a few pictures from our wedding. This was before I was into a conservative plain lifestyle. Sorry for the blurriness.

The Simple Woman's Daybook

For Today

Looking out my window  ...It has stopped snowing. It's been a mixture of snow, hail and rain today and it is very cold and windy out.
I am thinking... about whether I should prayerfully and gently confront a sister in the Lord who is being dishonest about something, though I hoped I had imagined it, sadly today I discovered it was true.☹
I am thankful... We made it home safely today after going into town and getting caught in the snowstorm. God is good!
One of my favorite things... is to read Keepers at Home magazine

I am wearing... a purple flowered dress covered up by my apron and black slippers

I am creating... well I will be sewing up some hanging veil head coverings. Some of the ones I have are getting stained. My middle daughter suggested I save my white veils for church or other church related activities. My husband suggested that I keep the stained ones for when I clean the house. They are so wise in their suggestions…
